A Small Company Doing Big Things at Alameda Point
As a commercial contractor based in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 20 years, we have seen firsthand the rapid and advanced development of our cities, and we imagine they will only continue to grow over the next few years. One such area is Alameda, ranked one of the best places to live in America.
We currently have the honor of working on a public works project at Alameda Point, a $1 billion waterfront development on the former Alameda Naval Air Station. The playground we’re building is located on Site A, which, when completed, will feature 800 residential units, commercial and retail spaces, 15 acres of parks, and new transit facilities, including a ferry terminal to get commuters to or from San Francisco in 20 minutes. We expect this development will create 1,500 permanent on-site jobs and 2,500 direct construction jobs, and many of the residential units will cater to low and middle-income families, creating more opportunities for affordable housing in the Bay Area.
Our latest playground project at Alameda Point pays homage to Allie the Wayward Whale, who was first spotted by the Alameda shoreline in the summer of 2019. After spending several weeks in these shallow, protected waters and gaining attention from locals and tourists alike, Allie seemed to recover from her poor health and embarked on her journey back into the open sea. Now, we’re partnering with Nicole Nowak and her team at Miracle Playsystems, who supplied all the equipment and designed this intricate, marine-themed playground to ensure Allie’s legendary legacy remains in the place she - for a brief moment in time - called home.
This inclusive playground features a humpback whale climber, swings, an imaginative area, and accessible fitness equipment for all to enjoy. We broke ground on this project at the beginning of February, and we’re looking to wrap it up in just a couple of weeks. Stay tuned for photos of the completed project!
According to the Greenbelt Alliance, Site A at Alameda Point is a “prime example of sustainable, equitable, transit-oriented development” that protects itself from rising sea levels. All in all, it’s a project that keeps the future and wellbeing of this community development in mind, and we love being able to play a part in it.
Though we’re able and willing to work on a wide range of commercial projects, there’s something special about building for something greater. Whether it’s the Sprung Structures we build to help combat the homelessness crisis in our communities or a fun, safe playground that brings unity to the neighborhood, we love working on projects that extend beyond ourselves and make a difference in our community. After all, we are a small company doing BIG things.
